European Union Votes for Binational Divorce
Published on 07/13/2010
The European Union has voted to simplify divorce proceedings in 14 countries for couples of different nationalities. As a result of this historic vote, couples will now be able to choose which laws they would like to apply to their divorce.
This new procedure will allow couples to save time and money. There were more than 1 million divorces throughout the European Union in 2007 that involved couples of different nationalities.
Under the new law, if couples cannot agree to which laws will apply to their divorce, judges will rely on a standard formula that will be applicable. The European Parliament, as well as Justice Ministers, have already backed the agreement.
The 14 countries are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.
