Published on 07/29/2010
Although the leaking oil may have been stopped, the legal ramifications of the largest oil spill in US history are just beginning. Millions of victims will likely become embroiled in a massive legal battle that could potentially last for decades.
Many of the cases come before a federal panel in Boise, Idaho today. Judges must determine who will oversee the many cases and where they will be tried.
Since the disaster occurred on April 20th, hundreds of attorneys have filed countless lawsuits that seek damages that are expected to reach tens of billions of dollars.
BP has reportedly set $20 billion aside that may be used to pay for the disaster.
Among the damage suits filed, most come from fishermen, property owners, restaurants, and charter operators who claim financial losses caused by damage to marine life and to the tourism industry.
Also among the lawsuits filed are wrongful death suits coming from the families of 11 men who died in the initial explosion. Many environmental groups have also brought suit.
The location of the trial, which the federal panel must determine, will be crucial as many of those involved in the lawsuits want the trial to be held in close proximity to the Gulf Coast.
