Judge Blocks Arizona Immigration Law

A federal judge has prevented parts of the controversial new Arizona immigration law from going into effect.

US District Court Judge Susan Bolton issued a preliminary injunction against four sections of the law which she believes conflict with the existing federal immigration scheme.

The key provisions that she has blocked are the required immigration status check of those stopped legally, requirements that immigrants carry their papers at all times, the ban on undocumented workers from soliciting employment, and the warrantless arrest provision against those who may be deportable.

The judge stated these provisions of the law will likely burden legal aliens and will burden the federal government due to increased requests for immigration status.

A total of seven lawsuits have been filed against the law. These include suits from civil rights groups as well as a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department.

A request has been made to consolidate the lawsuits, although this request has been opposed by lawyers for the Justice Department.

Legal experts predict that the challenges to the law will reach the US Supreme Court.
