Published on 07/30/2010
This recall will bring the total number of vehicles that have been recently recalled by Toyota to nearly 9 million.
About 373,000 Avalons made between 2000 and 2004 are being recalled. These vehicles have improperly cast steering lock bars which have purportedly led to three accidents.
Similarly, 39,000 Lexus luxury model LX470s dating from 2003 to 2007 are also being recalled. This model has a different steering shaft problem.
No injuries have resulted from the accidents, Toyota says.
This most recent recall comes in the wake of a worldwide recall of 8.5 Toyota vehicles that had numerous problems including faulty floor mats, defective gas pedals, and braking problems.
Toyota faces more than 200 lawsuits in the US resulting from the recall. The company was subject to a record $16 million dollar fine from the US government.
The value and reputation of Toyota, the number one automaker in the world, has been greatly affected by this continued string of recalls.
